Can you get into a Canadian university without IELTS?

Yes, if your institution accepts another form of proof. There's no national English rule for admission. Each university and college writes its own, and requirements can differ between programmes at the same institution.

Keep two checks apart. Admission is the institution's decision. The study permit is IRCC's, and since SDS ended no study permit stream requires a language test as standard. Your letter of acceptance, your funds and a believable plan carry the application.

How do you prove your English without IELTS?

3. Email admissions and get written confirmation that your MOI letter, or a test you already hold, meets the requirement.
4. If a test is still needed, pick one that every programme on your list accepts.
5. Keep the confirmation emails, and say in your study plan how you met the English requirement.

What does the study permit need now that SDS is gone?

Have these ready before you apply:

• A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI).
• A provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL), unless you're a master's or doctoral student at a public institution, who has been exempt since 1 January 2026.
• Proof of funds: CAD 23,448 for living costs for a single applicant outside Quebec on applications from 1 September 2026 (it was CAD 22,895 before), plus first-year tuition and travel. Quebec sets its own amounts.
• A study plan that explains why this programme and how you met its English requirement.

Will you need a language test later anyway?

Possibly. The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) has its own language requirement, proven with an approved test, so skipping IELTS for admission may only postpone it. Check the level for your programme and the accepted tests on IRCC's PGWP page.

College and other non-degree programmes also carry a field-of-study requirement for the PGWP; bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees don't. IRCC has frozen the eligible list for 2026, but still check a non-degree programme's CIP code on the list before you accept. While you study, you can usually work up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions, and since 1 April 2026 you don't need a separate co-op work permit for a required placement.
