We use the modified Bavarian formula — the same method uni-assist uses. The minimum pass mark varies by university; adjust it to match yours.

Germany grades on a 1.0–4.0 scale where 1.0 is the best and 4.0 is the lowest pass. To place a foreign grade on that scale, universities and uni-assist apply the modified Bavarian formula, which compares your grade to the best and lowest passing grades of your own system. A higher grade in your system maps to a lower (better) German number.
Most German universities and uni-assist use the modified Bavarian formula: German = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin), where Nmax is the best possible grade, Nmin is the lowest passing grade, and Nd is the grade you achieved. The result runs from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (lowest pass).
It varies by program, but many competitive master's programs look for a German grade of 2.5 or better. Some accept up to 3.0, and a few selective programs want 2.0 or better. Always check the specific program's stated requirement — there is no single national cutoff.
No. This is an indicative conversion to help you plan. The official grade is calculated by uni-assist or the university from your full transcript. Use this to gauge where you stand, then verify against each program.
Often yes — many programs let you apply and submit the language certificate later, and some German-taught programs need TestDaF/DSH instead of IELTS. Check each program's rules, and use Smart Match to find options that fit your profile.
This tool gives an indicative conversion and general guidance only. Official grade conversion and admission decisions are made by uni-assist and the universities. Always verify requirements on the official program pages.
