UK Graduate Route 2026: The 18-Month Change Explained

If you apply for the UK Graduate visa on or before 31 December 2026, you get two years to stay and work after a bachelor's or master's. Apply on or after 1 January 2027 and you get 18 months. PhD graduates keep three years either way. The date you apply decides it, not the date your course started.

What exactly is changing?

The Graduate Route lets you stay in the UK after a successful course and work, look for work or be self-employed, with no job offer and no employer sponsor. Until now, bachelor's and master's graduates got two years on it.

For applications made on or after 1 January 2027, that drops to 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates keep three years. Who qualifies stays the same: you need to be in the UK on a Student visa, and your university needs to tell the Home Office you've successfully completed your course. Two more rules shape your planning. You can't extend a Graduate visa, so the time you start with is the time you get. And the visa starts on the day your application is approved, so the weeks you spend waiting for a decision aren't taken off your stay.

Why does the application date matter so much?

The Home Office looks at the date you submit your application. It doesn't matter when your course started, when you sat your last exam or when you graduate. Two students on the same course can end up with different lengths of stay because one applied on 30 December and the other on 2 January.

That makes timing the one thing you control. You can't apply until your university has reported your successful completion, and you must apply before your Student visa expires. Between those two points, apply early if you're anywhere near the new year.

Don't confuse completion with graduation. gov.uk says you don't have to wait for your ceremony or your certificate. Once your university has told the Home Office you've completed the course, you can apply.

What to do if you finish in 2026

If your course ends this year, you may still be able to lock in two years. Work through this list now, not in late December.

1. Ask your university when it will report your completion to the Home Office. Results boards and reporting dates vary by university, so get the date in writing if you can.
2. Check the end date on your Student visa. You must apply before it expires, whichever year that falls in.
3. Get your documents ready early. gov.uk lists your passport and the CAS reference number from your Student visa application as the core documents.
4. Budget for the application fee and the health surcharge. The Graduate visa has its own fee and its own surcharge rate, separate from the student figures, so check the current figure on gov.uk.
5. Apply as soon as you're eligible. If your completion is reported in December, don't leave the application to the last few days of the year.

If your completion won't be reported until 2027, nothing you do will get you two years. Plan around 18 months instead.

A quick way to see where you stand: most taught master's in the UK last one year, so a course that started in autumn 2025 usually ends in 2026. One that started in January 2026 or autumn 2026 will usually end in 2027, which puts you under the 18-month rule. Check your own course end date rather than relying on the intake month.

What about English and the January 2026 changes?

From 8 January 2026 the UK raised the English requirement from B1 to B2 for Skilled Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual visas. Skilled Worker is the visa most graduates hope to move into after the Graduate Route. You may see the change reported as covering the Graduate Route too, but it doesn't.

When we checked gov.uk in September 2026, the Graduate visa documents list asked for your passport and your CAS reference number, with no English test. Rules can change, so read the current guide before you apply rather than booking a test you don't need.

Can your family stay with you on the Graduate Route?

Only in limited cases. New dependants generally can't join you on the Graduate Route. If your partner or children are already in the UK as dependants on your Student visa, they can apply to stay as dependants on your Graduate visa, and their visa ends on the same date as yours.

gov.uk also lets a child born in the UK during your stay apply. Each family member makes a separate application and pays a separate fee. If you want a partner to join you from abroad later, that generally depends on switching to a different visa, such as Skilled Worker.

Is 18 months still worth planning around?

Yes, if you use it well. Eighteen months is still enough time to find a graduate job and switch to a sponsored work visa if an employer offers one, but there is less room for a slow start. Start applying for jobs during your final term, not after results day. Line up referees and a UK-style CV before your course ends, so you can apply the week your results land.

It also helps to compare. Germany gives graduates an 18-month residence permit to look for work, so from 2027 the two countries match on post-study time for bachelor's and master's graduates. The bigger differences are cost and language, which is where your own numbers should decide it.
